The Secret Life of the American Teenager

The other day I saw that the show "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" was on. I had heard of this show before, and watched a few minutes before being annoyed at how ridiculous it is. The show is about a teenage girl that becomes pregnant and has to deal with a lot of issues and situations that stem from that. The thing that I don't like about this show is that is makes teen pregnancy seem accepted normal, and does not accurately portray the REAL and DEEP consequences that would stem from this. Yes, I do think that this happens...I know of many teenage girls that have gotten pregnant out of wedlock, but I don't think that this show portrays the heartbreaking and very sad consequences that these girls really experience. I think the media distorts reality in a lot of ways like this. And because they make it seem normal and accepted, probably a lot of teenagers think of it as normal and are more likely to get into trouble and actually experience these negative consequences themselves.

  2. I know! We watched like five minutes of this and it was all about the girl who had the baby having condoms in her purse so she could be responsible/ready for anything ON A FIRST DATE. and OH the drama. ABCFamily TV shows are over the top.

  3. That's kind of disheartening that such a show airs. I think shows like this can be powerful "normalizers" that teach viewers what "everyone" is doing or at least what's acceptable.
